The Interpretation: Media Reflection

The Interpretation
Media Blog Reflection by Leevi Symister, 11/12/2020

Wow, I am actually so glad that we did this unit in Critical Thinking. I honestly had no clue about any of these things that were happening while I was using the media in my everyday life. I definitely feel that I have become more media literate throughout this course. I learned all the ways that advertisers exploit people’s data in order to target them with ads that will make them want to buy their product. I discovered that they create emotional appeals in their viewers in order to make them more susceptible to the products being showcased in the ads. I never even took a minute to realize how much media is in my life. I encounter it for hours upon hours everyday whether its on social media or even on billboards around the city. This has caused media to engrain itself upon me and that has left me susceptible to all of the tactics that companies use in order to get people like me to buy their stuff. So far the fact …

Is There Any Hope Left by Leevi Symister, 11/12/2020

Ok, so "Miss Representations" has opened our eyes up to a whole new view of the media and how it is used to objectify women, but that was written almost a decade ago, so have things really started to change? I do not think that the issues addressed in the documentary are getting better. I believe that people especially women are starting to notice these issues more and more but I still do not believe that the issues are getting better. Women on the media still try to objectify themselves and still think that it is ok. This just makes other women want to do the same and we get a never ending cycle. I also think that men are starting to notice these issues a lot more now then before, but I still think that they remain oblivious to how to help women because this issue is just so widespread. Ultimately I think to start the change to stop women from being objectified women need to start posting on social medi…

Money, Money, Money by Leevi Symister, 12/22/19

Ok, so we all have just recently finished watching "Merchants of Cool" by Frontline and we saw all of the crafty ways that companies try in order to help sell their products to young teenagers. These companies try to place themselves inside of teen culture in order to make a few extra millions of dollars. This however is still going on, and today I think it has gotten even worst. I recently saw this ad for Pepsi and it, of course, has Cardi B pasted on the front of it staring the ad. This is really annoying because companies have realized that the days of selling products for their great taste or low costs are over. Those things no longer work to try and get people, especially teenagers to buy their stuff. Instead what they have decided to start doing is using teenage culture against the teens themselves. Most teens love Cardi B, or at the least know of her. By slapping her on the ad, using the Testimonial t…

YouTube is Getting Annoying by Leevi Symister, 12/22/19
Hello and welcome back to another discussion in The Interpretation. Today we will be discussing some media experiences that I have had with YouTube. First, let me just ask you a simple question, "How much do you use YouTube?". I'm guessing for most of you reading this, the answer is "All the time". It's so weird to think that we use YouTube so damn much. I mean have you ever just taken a moment to think of whether or not there is another piece of software that is like YouTube that displays videos for you. There are, but they are definitely not as mainstream as YouTube. Think about how every time you have searched for something in Google or Safari, et cetera, how many YouTube videos have popped up in less than a second waiting for you to click on them. YouTube is just such a mainstream platform that we all probably use it at the least once everyday. However, like most products that a…

Watch This, I Think It's Awesome by Leevi Symister, 12/15/19 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRCdORJiUgU Ok, ok, ok, welcome back to another post in The Interpretation. Today we will be discussing this semi-ad/ just really awesome video that made me happy when I first saw it. So originally, I was just on YouTube, prolonging my period of procrastination and doing nothing productive that would help benefit me or others in any way, when I saw this ad pop up on my screen and I watched it. It was an ad by Google, technically promoting their search engine, but still just a great video. It was about how the searches for heroes in 2019 boomed and it showed us all these different searches and clips of heroes. It had a section for superheroes, supermoms, superdads, and even more. I know, I know, I know, that sounds really boring and dumb, but the way they presented it was amazing. They had this really inspirational music that was going on in the background and that was hon…

Fossil, Fossil, Fossil, SMH :( by Leevi Symister, 12/15/19 Hello and welcome back to another article from The Interpretation. Today we will be discussing an ad by Fossil, a fashion design company, for their new watch the Gen 5. This ad really makes me laugh every damn time I see it. What the ad is about is how supposedly the Gen 5 Fossil watch has the ability to bring people together making your holiday parties just so much better. To me this ad is just is too cringy. The people in it are just moving about dancing, drinking, eating, and talking and then the camera will just randomly flash over to their wrists where they are wearing their brand new Gen 5 watch with all their different customized watch bands and everything. I think that this ad is way to far fetched from its product. It's obvious that this was created by the Fossil advertising company to try and create an ad for their watch that fit in with the Christmas holiday spirit, but in my opinion this was …
